Press Release: POGS Successfully Hosts Its Inaugural POGS CHEERS Event
From Stigma to Support: Amplifying Our Voices, Saving Our Lives
On September 10th, 2024, Positive Outlook Guidance Services (POGS) proudly launched the first session of POGS CHEERS (Community Health Empowerment + Education Resource Support), focusing on National Suicide Prevention Month. Titled “From Stigma to Support: Amplifying Our Voices, Saving Our Lives,” this virtual brown bag session brought our community together for a powerful and transformative discussion on mental health and suicide prevention.
Moderated by Dr. Sylvia Long, Director of POGS Health & Wellness Initiatives, the event was anchored by the inspiring words of Candace Washington, LMSW, CEO of Restorative Minds Therapeutic and Wellness Services. Candace delivered an empowering message about breaking the silence around mental health struggles, encouraging participants to shift from stigma to support. Her insights resonated deeply, offering practical tools to foster mental wellness in our communities.
The session underscored the importance of open communication, empathy, and proactive care in the fight against suicide. The interactive format allowed attendees to share their personal experiences and reflections, reinforcing the event’s theme of amplifying our collective voices. Together, we learned how crucial it is to recognize signs of distress and offer support to those in need.
This first POGS CHEERS event was more than just a webinar—it was a moment of collective empowerment. We left with renewed hope, actionable strategies, and a strengthened commitment to supporting mental health in our community. As we continue this quarterly series, we remain steadfast in our mission to foster a healthier, more resilient future for all.
Stay tuned for our next POGS CHEERS session in December, where we’ll focus on HIV/AIDS Awareness Month. Together, we are building a foundation of knowledge, compassion, and strength—one conversation at a time.
Let’s continue the journey. Together, we are saving lives.
